CONTACT LENSES
OBTAINABLE AS OUTPATIENTS
BENFITS
P.A. WELLINGTON, May 29. The Minister of Health, Mr Nordmeyer, announced to-day that the conditions had ben gazetted under which contact lenses will be obtainable as hospital out-patients’ benefits. The supply of lenses would be limited to persons suffering from certain optical disabilities which could not be satisfactorily corrected by the usual type of spectacle lenses, but which, in the opinon of the ophthalmologist, would be benefited by contact lenses. Contact lenses, said the Minister, had proved satisfactory in cases of conical cornea and certain forms of irregular astigamtism. The lenses were now being manufactured and fitted in New Zealand. Applications for them should be made in all cases to the hospital board for the district in which the applicant resided. The Minister added that the lenses were the first of the artificial aids to be supplied in this way, and he hoped to be able to announce shortly similar provisions for hearing aids. In the meantime, a patient could select his own brand of hearing aid and claim a substantial payment towards its cost from the Social Security Fund. He hoped that it would be possible later to supply a standardised hearing aid free of charge.
