MODERATES’ VICTORY

TRADES COUNCIL ELECTION Industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, May 28. The moderates led by Mr F. P. Walsh (Seamen’s Union) scored a significant victory at the election of officers of the Wellington Trades Council to-night. Mr Walsh was elected for his eleventh term of office as president, defeating Mr E. A. Napier (Waterside Workers’ Union) by 82 votes to 45.

The meeting was the biggest since the inception of the council. The only change in the Management Committee was the defeat of Mr Napier by Mr J. Neale, national secretary of the Engineers’ Union. Mr P. M. Butler (General Labourers’ Union) is replaced by Mr R. S. Thomas (Printing Trades Union) as Wellington member of the National Council of the Federation of Labour.
