NEW SOVIET DECREE

DEATH SENTENCE ABOLISHED MOSCOW, May 26. The Supreme Soviet has issued a decree abolishing the death sentence in peace time from to-day. The abolition of the death sentence means that for death sentences not yet carried out and punishment for crimes previously meriting the death sentence the alternative punishment of confinement in forced labour camps for 25 years will be adopted. The decree stated: “Peace can be considered secure for a long time, in spite of the attempts of aggressive elements to provoke war; therefore the Supreme Soviet, meeting the wishes of trade unions, workers, and employers, considers the use of the death sentence in peace time no longer a necessity.”
