INFLUENZA RIFE

OUTBREAK IN TONGA ROYAL WEDDINGS POSTPONED P.A. AUCKLAND, May 27 An outbreak of influenza in Tonga is responsible for the postponement of the royal weddings until June 10, states advice received from Nukualofa. The reports state that hundreds of people at Vavau and at least 5000 persons in Tongatapu are confined to their beds, but a representative of the New Zealand agents of the Tongan Government said that it was only a mild outbreak, and could not be termed an epidemic. One report says the Tongan people believe that the failure of their authorities to place the Union Steam Ship Company’s motor vessel Matua under quarantine at Vavau and Nukualofa after her arrival from Apia is responsible for the introduction of the disease.
