MANY IMPROVEMENTS

ORTOBELLO SHOW GROUND . AND P. SOCIETY’S WORK An indication of the extensive imrovements that are being made to the tow ground at Portobello, which it is oped will be finished for the Peninlla A. and P. Society's annual show n December 13, was given by the resident, Mr J. J. McKendry, .at the nnual meeting of the society on 'hursday. He said that it was the bject of the society to convert the round into a sports area for the chilren attending school on the Peninula. The former buildings had been ismantled, and were being re-erected t the lower end of the ground. They v'ould be used as dressing sheds for thp hildren.

Mr McKendry added that a property djoining the show ground which had armerly been used by the society had een sold, and it was found necessary to ;vel a portion of the ground owned by le society. A mortgage had been raised or~the purpose. The bulldozing of the rea was completed at the end of Janury, and working parties had been iusy since sowing grass seed, planting hedge around the levelled portion, nd putting in concrete foundations for building to be erected on the lower lortion of the ground. Mr McKendry ppealed to residents of the district to issist the voluntary workers from the nembership of the society in doing he work.

The annual report, which was dopted, stated that it had been found lecessary to abandon the dances caried on bv the society owing to a lack f support bv members, although a ne'. >rofit of £l4O had been shown in two meats’ operations. - Election of Officers The election of officers for the year esulted: —President, Mr J J.
