TWELVE TEAMS

RUGBY COMPETITION MATCHES IN ONE SECTION An entry of 12 teams was received for the Senior Competition by the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby, Football Union at its weekly meeting last night, and after a discussion it was resolved that the competition should be played in one section. The teams are: University A, Southern, Zingari-Richinond, Kaikorai, Pirates, Dunedin, Training College, University B, Union, Taieri, Port Chalmers, and Alhambra. The chairman of the Flag Committee, Mr E. Kerr, said that the committee was of opinion that the competition should be played outright. The University and Training College teams experienced difficulty in fielding teams during the vacation, and this would react unfavourably if the competition were divided into two sections. Mr A. H. Cameron said there was a feeling abroad that the time was opportune to divide the Senior Competition into two sections, with six teams in each, and he moved accordingly, the motion being seconded by Mr J. R. Caradus. Mr Kerr said he. did not think it wise to divide the teams into two sections, either from the point of view of the public or the clubs generally. The annual meeting of the union had granted senior status to two further clubs, and there was no option to having 12 teams in the Senior Competition.

Mr H. Harris agreed with the opinion that the Senior Competition should be played in one section, and that every team should have the. opportunity of meeting every other team. Personally, he thought 12 senior teams were too many, but as the delegates had admitted 12 senior teams,’ they should be played in one section. Mr Caradus said the division of the competition might improve the standard of play. The better class of teams would be playing against one another, and the same would apply to the weaker teams which would have the opportunity of building up. Mr Harris moved as an amendment that the Senior Competition be played in one section, and this was carried.
