LESS THAN HUMAN
PROPORTION OF MIGRANTS FORMER NURSE’S STRICTURES MELBOURNE, Apl. 21. “We have all nationalities on the ship, and some of them are not human," commented Mrs Margot Jones, former New Zealand Army nurse, when the migrant ship, Misr, arrived at Melbourne from the Middle East via Fremantle. She said that the food was plentiful and of better quality than that served in a troopship.’ Mrs Jones slept in the steerage dormitory, and ate in the first-class saloon. Commenting on her fellow travellers she said: “ Some are so filthy they are revolting. Ido not think they have ever seen a lavatory before.” Captain Louis Drexel blamed the passengers for the unhygienic conditions in the ship. He said that many Greek passengers came from piitr.itive mountain villages, and coula not read or write. The second officer who spoke Greek, appealed to them to observe some form of hygiene.
