OTAGO SUCCESSFUL

INTERPROVINCIAL SWIMMING CONTEST WITH SOUTHLAND Otago retained possession of the Sports Trust Shield in the annual interprovincial swimming contest! with Southland at the Municipal Baths on Saturday night by a margin of 131 points to 77 points. The performances In most events were well up to New Zealand championship standard, and in some cases the times were as good as any that have been recorded in the Dunedin Baths. There was a good attendance. The best performance of the evening was accomplished by Lyell Barry, the New Zealand Men’s 220 Yards Freestyle champion, in the 100 Yards Freestyle event. Barry, who was making his first appearance for Otago, is a fine stylist, and swimming a brilliant race, he defeated his team-mate, W. J. Jarvis, by three yards in 55 2-ssec, the fastest time ever put up in the Dunedin baths. It was only 1 3-ssec outside the New Zealand record. The previous best for the pool was 56sec by W. J. Jarvis in 1934. Jarvis, the New Zealand Medley champion, provided a surprise by defeating P. Fleischl, the New Zealand University champion, in the 100 Yards Men’s Breaststroke in 76 2-ssec. This was Jarvis’s first appearance in a breaststroke championship race since he won a New Zealand junior title at that style some 16 or 17 years ago, and he won by a touch in a thrilling finish. A Clean Sweep T. E. Wilson (Otago) returned the fast time of 67 l-ssec to win the 100 Yards Men’s Backstroke in 67 l-ssec, defeating last year’s winner, C. Martin (Southland) by two yards, and J. Stewart, the New Zealand men’s champion, gave a firstclass display to win the Senior Diving by a margin of 23 points from his Otago teammate, V. Eckhoff. Otago completed a clean sweep In the men’s section with victories in the 500 Yards Flying Squadron Relay by a wide margin, and the Water Polo by 7 goals to 4. In the Water Polo, Otago led by 6 —o at half-time, but Southland improved in the second spell and shot four goals, Otago finding the net only once more.

The home team also swept the pool in the senior women’s class. Competition in the diving was confined to the New Zealand champion, Miss Mayzod Reid, and Miss Betty Moore, both of Otago, Miss Moore winning by eight points after good displays by both girls. The 100 Yards Women’s Freestyle was one of the most exciting races on the programme. Miss J. Fraser, the Otago champion, led all the way, but was hard pressed over the last lap, first by Miss B. Beadle (Southland), and then by Miss N. Lane (Otago). In a blanket finish, Miss Fraser won by a touch in 70sec from Miss Lane, with Miss Beadle barely a foot away. Miss N. Lane had a runaway victory in the 100 Yards Women’s Backstroke, finishing 14 yards ahead of Miss K. Bradshaw (Southland) In 73 4-ssec, with Miss A. Lane inches back third. The winner’s time was less than two seconds outside her recently-approved New Zealand record. Otago filled all the places in the 100 Yards Breaststroke, the winner of which was Miss M. Hughes. The time, lmin 30 4-ssec was seven seconds outside the New Zealand record, but there was a close finish. Miss Hughes defeating Miss V. Brown by barely 18 inches. Otago won the Intermediate and Junior water polo match by 6 goals to 1, but Southland won all the other events in these classes, including the 133 1-3 Yards Junior and intermediate Relay in which the time was 73 4-ssec and the winning margin 14 yards. Warren Pasley (Southland), who won the 100 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Freestyle by four yards in 65 sec and the 100 Yards Backstroke in 71 4-ssec, displayed excellent form and was the only dual winner at the meeting. He won the backstroke race by a margin of two yards from C. Gibson, the Otago champion, and his time was only one second slower than the Dominion record, established by A. R. Wilson (Otago) in 1942. Southland Successes There was a desperately fought finish to the 100 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Breaststroke in which barely a yard separated the three placed competitors. L. Withers (Southland) touched just ahead of B. Tremaine, the Otago champion, 1n.84 3-ssec and T. Horn (Otago) was just a fraction behind. The winner, in his first season as an intermediate, showed considerable promise. O. Woodham, the New Zealand Junior Boys’ Freestyle champion, won the Junior 100,Yards nicely in 69sec, with A. Child (Otago) three yards back, and in winning the 100 Yards Backstroke in 81 4-ssec, C. Macdonald, one of a prominent Southland family of swimmers, was within 1 2-ssec of the New Zealand record in spite of the fact that he won by 14 yards. L. Simpson (Southland) won the 100 Yards Breaststroke in the comparatively slow time of 93 l-ssec and P. Preddy (Southland), the New Zealand champion, the diving after a good display. Otago won every event in 'the Intermediate and Junior Girls’ classes, although competition in these divisions was keen. Southland was unfortunate in the junior division, however, as Miss Margaret Menzies, the New Zealand freestyle champion, was unable to swim. A surprise was caused in the 100 Yards Junior Girls’ Freestyle, and Miss I, Gager, one of the most improved swimmers in Otago, won in the fast time of 71 3-ssec Miss R. Currie (Otago), the New Zealand Junior 100 Yards Breaststroke champion, won the 100 Yards Junior Girls’ Breaststroke by four yards from Miss J. Cockcroft (Southland) in 93 2-ssec and Miss M. Wilson (Otago), the New Zealand Junior Backstroke champion, had a yard and a-half to spare when she won the 50 Yards Junior Girls’ Backstroke from the same Southland swimmer in 36 2-ssee which was 1 3-ssec outside the New Zealand record.

The three events in the Intermediate Girls’ class were won by Otago swimmers, one of the best performances being Miss H. Forsyth’s 86 3-ssec for the 100 Yards Breaststroke. This was 1 l-ssec slower than the New Zealand record. Miss J. Stewart won the 100 Yards Backstroke in the good time of 78 4-ssec, and Miss G. Allen showed good promise to win the 100 Yards Freestyle in 73 4-ssec. The diving and Intermediate and Junior water polo match were decided on Saturday morning, and the winners of the diving gave displays at the evening session. At the conclusion of the programme the president of the Otago Swimming Centre Mr D. F. Watson, called on the manager of the Southland team, Mr H.
