RAIL TRANSPORT
EMBARGO RELAXED CARRIAGE OF NQN-PERISH- • ABLE GOODS The embargo which was placed on the transport of non-perishable goods by rail services to and from Dunedin throughout this week owing to the heavy demand for trucks to serve shipping at South Island ports will be relaxed to-day. An official of the Railways'Department said in an interview with the Daily Times yesterday that the transport of these goods should be back to normal at the weekend. , , , He stated that there had been an exceptionally heavy demand for trucks to transport cargo unloaded from shipping at Lyttelton and Port Chalmers in particular. The demand for rolling stock for the transportation of seasonal goods was always heavy at this time of the year, but a late season had further complicated schedules. More special trains than usual had beer! required to carry stock to and from sales in Central Otago. Efforts had also been made to build up stocks of coal for the Easter travelling period, which was earlier this year than usual. He added that industrial consignors of non-perishable goods in and around Dunedin had co-operated well with the Railways Department in eliminating bottlenecks in transport by bearing cuts in the supply of materials during the period of the embargo.
