SCHOOL OF OPERA
AUSTRALIAN VENTURE The English-born operatic soprano, Thea Philips, who has lived in Australia for many years, will shortly open a school of opera in Melbourne, to give Australian singers a chance to study opera without going abroad. Her aim will be to give opera to the people in a practical way. After thorough training, students Will give public performances. Miss Philips thinks that a Puccini opera will be among the first produced. The scheme is another step towards the goal of an Australian opera company and opera house. Interviewed in Melbourne recently, Miss Philips said, “ A country which can produce such glorious voices as those of Melba and Marjorie Lawrence should have its own opira. The school will give f singers a chance to study opera and its traditions ” The school, which is being sponsored by J. C. Wihiamson Ltd., will be known as the Thea Philips School of Opera. Miss Philips has sung at Covent Garden Opera House under Sir Thomas Beecham, Bruno Walter and Robert Heger, and with many other famous conductors. She studied in Italy, and first arrived in Australia with the Fuller Opera Company.
