FOOD SUPPLIES HELD UP EFFECT OF SHIPPING STRIKE Rec. 9 p.m. SYDNEY, Mar 17. The latest commodity to join potatoes and sugar on the list of shortages due to the shipping strike is salt. Unless supplies are forthcoming shortly the processing of meats and all cooked foods and the curing of hams and bacon may cease. A number of factories have already warned their staffs of impending dismissals. Potatoes on one of three ships carrying vegetable cargoes in the harbour have already begun to rot. The overtime dispute, which has laid over 70 ships idle, in Sydney, shows no sign of settlement. 'The president of the Sydney branch of .the Waterside Workers’ Federation, Mr W. Coghlan, said that the next move rested with the Stevedoring Industry Commission. The assistant general secretary of the federation, Mr E. Roach, stated that the dispute was purely a matter for the Sydney branch. He would not comment on the suggestion that the Federal Council might interfere. Meanwhile a sugar and potato famine threatens Sydney. Most grocers are already rationing sugar as housewives rush to use all available coupons.
