CAUGHT IN TIDE RIP

CHAMPION SWIMMER RESCUED P.A. AUCKLAND, Mar. 17. A dramatic prelude to a life-saving demonstration by the surf club members at Piha, the popular Auckland west coast beach, was the rescue of the national junior swimming title and record holder, John Jarvis, who went out for a swim and got caught in a vicious rip. A life saver cruising on a ski saw him in difficulties, but the ski was damaged when he endeavoured to rescue Jarvis, who later was brought ashore by another life saver with a ski. Jarvis suffered no ill effects and competed in the surf race, finishing fourth.
