BOWLING

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS VAUGHAN BEATS JOLLY Glorious weather and an excellent surface on the St. Kilda Club's green provided fitting conditions for the final day’s play in the Singles Champion of. Champions games. When Saturday’s play concluded six players remained in—L. Marsden (Kaituna)), with two lives, and W. Findlay (Kaikorai), J, French (West Harbour), N. E. Jolly (St. Clair), T. Ferguson (Balmacewen), and D. Vaughan (Caledonian). each with one life. In the first round of yesterday morning’s games Findlay, with a score of 18, took the first life from Marsden, whose total was 13. Jolly 26 had a fairly easy win over French, 13, and Vaughan, 21, eliminated Ferguson, 13. In the second round Jolly and Findlay had a keen struggle, the former winning by 18 points to 16, and Vaughan led all the way against Marsden to win by 21 points to 13. This left the holder of the champions trophy, N. E. Jolly, and the immediate past champion, D. Vaughan, to contest the final, and with two such polished exponents of the singles game the large bank of spectators were treated to a display of bowling that was worthy of the important occasion. A very light breeze was blowing across the green, but not sufficient to detract from the remarkable accuracy of the players. Not only was the drawing very fine, but the driving, which was resorted to occasionally, was deadly on the part of each player. Jolly took the lead in the early stages, and on »the eleventh end the score board read 9 —6 in his favour, and singles on the next two ends gave him a lead of 11—6 on the thirteenth. Singles to each in turn, followed by a single and 'a 2 to Vaughan, reduced the scores to 12—10 in Jolly’s favour. The next end, the eighteenth, was burnt by Vaughan when Jolly was lying two counters, and the former then notched a single to reduce his deficit to one point. The nineteenth end was burnt by Jolly with a fast, clean drive when Vaughan lay two shots, and the replay gave a single to the St. Clair champion—l3—ll. The penultimate head was a well-playe.d one, from which Vaughan scored a brace. This made the tallies level— l3—l3—when the last end was commenced. Vaughan got a counter in with his second bowl, and as this was not beaten or added to the Caledonian man ran out a winner by 14 points to 13. The following are the results of the day’s play:— First Round Findlay (one life) 18, Marsden (two lives) 11. Jolly 26, French -13. Vaughan 22, Ferguson 13. French and Ferguson were eliminated. Second Round Jolly 18, Findlay 16, Vaughan 21, Marsden 13. Findlay and Marsden eleminated. Final D. Vaughan (Caledonian) .. .. 14 N. E. Jolly (St. Clair) 13
