SEARCH FOR RELATIVES
CHINESE TO RETURN HOME Special Correspondent , SYDNEY, Mar. 4. A humble Chinese arrived in Sydney by plane at the week-end from New Zealand, on the first stage of his long journey home to China to search for his two daughters, aged 20 and 21 respectively. There are 400.000,000 people in China—ravaged for 10 years by fighting, and civil war is now sprfeading—but he is undismayed. “I hope to find them," he said, “but the Japanese have been there. . . Ten other Chinese who arrived with him from New Zealand are also home-ward obound to search for their families. They have heard nothing from their kinfolk for years. Most of the Chinese are market gardeners and shop-owners in Auckland, and will spend their life’s savings in the search. They will complete their journey to China on the “Taiping.” Their search will begin in Canton. “ But we will go back to New Zealand,’’ they said, "maybe take two, three years, but we go back to Auckland.’’ Only two of them spoke English fluently. They are all friends and waited to make the trip until there were sufficient berths to accommodate the lot. The Chinese were intrigued with their first plane ride: “ Much smoother than boat and Chinese train, ’’ they said.
