GALVANISED IRON
SUPPLY DIFFICULTIES THE SHIPPING - PROBLEM The annual conference of the New Zealand Galvanised Sheet Guild was held in Napier recently. Mr H. M. Taylor (Christchurch) presided over a fully representative gathering of hardware ' and plumbers’ merchants from all over New Zealand. The serious position regarding the supply of both galvanised corrugated roofing iron and galvanised flat sheets was discussed at length. Much concern was expressed that, because of the slow turn-round of ships in New Zealand and the strikes in Australia, the New Zealand market had lost over 1000 tons of iron during the last year. This had had a detrimental effect on the building and plumbing trade, and meant that the completion of houses was bejng held up everywhere. The delay in receiving shipments had resulted that essential repairs to numbers of houses and other buildings had not been carried out, which in many cases had been the cause of excessive loss to properties Future supplies from England were very uncertain, but it was stated that Australia could supply fair quantities provided the necessary shipping space was available.
