A TRIUMPH
DANGER MONEY WANGANELLA DISPUTE £324 TO EACH MAN By Our Industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. The 30 Australian seamen on the Wanganella who struck at a crucial moment when the ship was being moved from her harbour berth to the floating dock a fortnight ago have had a major victory. The Strikes and Lock-outs Tribunal to-day granted them 15s an hour danger money each for 24 hours a day on each of the 18 days on which the Wanganella was stranded on Barrett’s Reef. This means a total of £324 a man. The Federal secretary of the Australian Seamen's Union, Mr E. V. Elliott, will leave Wellington to-morrow on the way to Sydney with a major triumphj which he has won with the backing of New Zealand shore workers. An investment of £260 in sending him here has returned the seamen £9720. The tribunal was presided over by Mr J. A. Gilmour, S.M. The employers and union officials did not agree, and the magistrate gave the decision. Both parties had previously agreed to abide by the decision of this New Zealand tribunal. The seamen’s original claim was for 17s 6d an hour on a 24-hour day basis. The previous grant given by the employers was 5s an hour for working hours only. The claims of the shore workers remain to be settled before the repair work proceeds.
