Jottings Aurora Australis has won £4330 in stakes. The Dunedin owner. Mr E. N. Didham, is at present a patient in a private hospital. D. P. Wilson's team at Trentham will be Patmos. Grill and Frances. The lastnamed looked particularly well before being taken north. Winner at Wingatui Indian Dawn will only need to reproduce the form she showed at Wingatui to take part in the finish of the Apprentices' Handicap at Trentham. The mile journey will not trouble her. First Success When Lorna Leigh won at Wyndham it was her first success. A half-sister by Battle Song to the smart sprinter Leigh Barton, she is now trained at Wingatui by J. A. Wilson. She apparently likes soft going. A Difficult Task Privilege will be started in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham without the benefit of a preliminary race, and will face a difficult task meeting fillies which have been seasoned by racing over the holiday meetings. Privilege did not have’ a race between the Wellington Guineas and the New Zealand Oaks, otherwise she might, have been much harder to beat in the Oaks. Unfortunately Privilege is a' lazy track worker. She had her last race in the Members’ Handicap on the final day at Riccarton. Former New Zealander The former New 2&aland trainers M. McCarten, J Fryer and R. Cameron, had five successes at the Christmas carnival meetings in Sydney and Melbourne. On Boxing Day at Randwick, McCarten had two wins with Sweet Chime and Wellington, and at Caulfield on the same afternoon Fryer won the £ISOO Hopetoun Handicap with Spearmain. Fryer also won the Talgarno Welter at Mentone on December 28 with Minanelaes. El Banco won the Rosebud Handicap at Mentone on the same afternoon for Cameron. Lord Derby’s Aim 1 In stakes the present Lord Derby has won slightly more than £Boo,ooo—a total no other owner at present racing anywhere in the world can rival. The colours of the Stanley family, of which Lord Derby is the head, »are black jacket and white cap. They were registered as long ago as 1780. An ancestor of the present holder of the title—the 12th Earl—was mainly responsible for founding the Derby and Oaks. After the first success of a horse owned by a Lord Derby in the Derby in 1787, the family did not have a winner of the great race again until Sansovino won in 1924. Since then Hyperion (1933) and Watling Street (1942).have won for Lord Derby. Lord Derby has one aim in racing and breeding. It is to maintain the prestige of British bloodstock. ' The Yearling Sales No fewer than 70 stallions will be represented in the catalogue, for the National yearling sales at Trentham next week, which is a record. The highest number previously represented was 63 last year. The sires include all the fashion-ably-bred imported horses now at the Stud with progeny old enough to be Offered, as well as the most successful of the New Zealand-bred horses at present represented by racing stock. The horses with the largest representation are Balioch (imp.) 31, Robin Goodfellow (imp.) 24, Probation (imp.) 21, Foxbridge (imp.) 18, Nizami (imp.) 18, Finis (imp.) 17, Arvakur 15 Battle Song (imp.) 15, Beau Vite 15, Airway (imp.) 13, Bulandshar (imp.) 13, Ninth Duke (imp.) 13, Neptune (imp.) 12, Coronach (imp.) 11, Beau Repaire 11, Tiderace (imp.) 11, and Tiieio (imp) 10. ‘
