LITTLE EFFECT
SUSPENSION ORDER WATERFRONT WORKING CONDITIONS RESTRICTED HOURS CONTINUE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 7. The suspension of most of the powers and authorities of the- Waterfront Industry Commission, as announced by the Government, has had no immediate effect on working conditions on the waterfront. The 40-hour week policy of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union continues in all the ports concerned. The employers are free now to move for the alteration of working conditions or wage rates, but it was learned to-day that they have as yet no intention of doing so. The dispute remains for the time being between the Government and the _ watersiders. In spite of official denials, police officers assert that the Government has stopped police leave since last Thursday. There has been a suggestion from Hastings that East Coast Maoris might be brought down as volunteer labour on the waterfront, but there is so far no evidence that the Government will attempt this move.
