SHARP ACTION AT MEDAN SITUATION DETERIORATING BATAVIA, Jan. 3. The Dutch Army has announced that a large-scale infantry action cleared Medan of Indonesian forces. A delayed despatch says that the Dutch dropped 30 bombs in five air attacks on Medan on December 30, killing five persons and wounding 14 Indonesians. Clashes also occurred at Palembang, Semarang and outside Batavia. Dr Soeharno, in a broadcast appeal for a peaceful settlement of the deteriorating position, said that the world must not prevent the former colony from becoming a new democratic State. The Netherlands East Indies and In* donesian Republic Governments in a combined effort to restore “the deteriorating military situation,’’ have jointly announced that in the republic’s view, the military truce is still in force, says the Batavia correspondent of the Associated Press.
