DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS BOLD DEFEATS GUNN HARD-FOUGHT MATCHES (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 6. The defeat of J. W. Gunn (Auckland), third ranked player in New Zealand, by the fast-footed Hutt Valley player, O. M. Bold, was the surprise of the second day of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Championships at Wilding Park. It was a day of long and well-contested matches, but unfortunately they had to be played on courts slowed and soaked by heavy overnight rain and were occasionally interrupted by further showers. To-day’s matches reduced the field in the Men’s Singles to 16 and Gunn is so far the only casualty among the seeded players, excepting C. Angas, who had to default. No women’s singles matches were played to-day and 16 are .left in this event also.' Bold’s win over Gunn was largely the result of tenacity and greater fitness. The further the match went the less likely did it appear that Gunn would win. The Auckland player started off at a fine pace, serving strongly and keeping Bold on the chase for deep drives into the corners and frequently coming to the net to volley Bold’s returns. The winner’s second set was a different story. A few mistakes when forcing the pace caused Gunn to slow down his game The rallies lengthened and as .they did so, Bold won more and more of them. Gunn appeared to have great trouble in dealing with Bold’s heavily sliced backhand which, biting into the wet turf, frequently rose no more than a few inches. Bold also excelled in difficult retrieving, constantly producing perfect lobs when under pressure. Perhaps the best stroking of the* day was seen in the match in which N. V. Edwards (Hutt Valley) beat another ranked but unseeded player in J. E. Robson (Otago) in four sets. J. A. Barry (Auckland), New Zealand junior champion, showed himself a fighter as well as a first-class stroke player in recovering from two sets to one down against M. J. Souter (South Canterbury). Souter has a reputation as a hard man to beat because, in spite of his heavy build* he is exceptionaly fast on his feet and his excellent control enables him to make good returns from apparently impossible positions. Barry was obviously surprised in the first and second sets at the number of his hard two-handed drives which came back. Barry kept on attacking and his strong twohanded shot on the right-hand side grew in effectiveness as the courts dried out and the bounce became a little higher. S. Painter (Wellington) after his narrow win over P. Smith on Saturday again had to fight hard, his opponent being an active and accurate player from Otago, J. W. Paterson, who showed a good stroke equipment of hard flat-hit drives, an excellent service, and smash and accurate volleys. Results:— Men’s Singles
