CONSERVATIVE SLOGAN

REFUSED BY POST OFFICE FRANKING OF CORRESPONDENCE (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 2. The General Post Office refused to allow the Conservative central office to frank its correspondence with the slogan, “Happy New Year and New Government Soon.” The Daily Mail says the slogan was authorised for use through the post by a Post Office official, but the authorisation was later withdrawn. One reason given was, “ It might embarrass the postmen,” and another was that political slogans had never been used before for franking purposes. A .Conservative office official commented: “ It is a thin excuse. Logically the next step is the censoring of what is inside the envelope.” He added that the party would continue to use the slogan.
