HEAVY REPAIR BILL
SYDNEY’S BRIEF HAILSTORM OVER A MILLION POUNDS / »■ (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 2. As further damage fi'gures are reported, the total bill for repairs following Sydney’s 10-minute hailstorm is mounting to over £1,000,000. Rough surveys indicate that over 500,000 panes of glass were shattered in the windows of factories, flats, and homes. The Waverley Borough Council reports damage to roads in the district of about £IOO,OOO, and proposes to approach the Federal Government for relief amounting to £60,000. To-day hundreds of factory workers are out of employment. Widespread thefts of tiles from partly-completed houses are reported, and there is much absenteeism among workers busily engaged on temporary repairs to their homes.
