American Officer Beaten with Canes By Chinese Students

(Rec. 0.30 a.xn.) SHANGHAI, Jan. 2. During anti-American demonstrations at Shanghai to-day a United States Army lieutenant was beaten on the head with bamboo canes by Chinese students, and an attempt was made to disrobe his girl companion. An Associated Press photographer, seeking to film the incident, received a black eye, The lieutenant grabbed the girl by the hand and succeeded in forcing his way through the cane-wielding crowd. In Pekin two United States marines were taken into custody in connection with the alleged rape of a Chinese girl, which led to anti - American demonstrations there.
