ATTEMPTED DESTRUCTION SON OF BUILDER CHARGED LONDON, Jan. 1: The French police arrested 61-year-old Paul de Lesseps, son of the man who built the Suez canal, and accused him of having tried to destroy the canal, says the British United Press Paris correspondent. De Lesseps was also charged with having tried to sell shares in the canal to German banking interests and with having supplied Germany with information on political activities in Egypt The police allege that de Lesseps tried to sell land in Turkey to the Germans as a base from which the Luftwaffe could attack the canal. De Lesseps claims that France owes him about X 10.000.000 compensation for this land, which was confiscated when Turkey entered the 1914-18 war.
