SHORTAGE OF LABOUR

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. The labour position on the Wellington waterfront to-day was worse than it has been for some time. Eight ships in port needing labour were idle, because none could be obtained, and six more were short. Two overseas ships, the Port Wellington and the Fort Nakasely, had no labour. The labour position has been aggravated by the large number of ships in port. Including fishing vessels, there were 52 ships here this morning. It is thought that this is probably the largest number since the end of the war.

The gross tonnage of the ships was 141,137. The port is fast becoming congested, and there are now few berths available.
