ARROWTOWN

THE HOLIDAYS The weather during the week has been fair to fine with intermittent rain but insufficient to dampen the holiday spirit which prevails among the many visitors to the township. The camping ground is being well patronised. QUEEN CARNIVAL The town queen is leading in the queen contest with tire country queen second and the services queen third. The final week of the carnival commenced on Thursday, when the tennis club held a successful knock-out and tournament in which representatives of the neighbouring towns participated The winners were:—Ladies’ Singles, Miss Hamilton (Arrow); Men’s Singles, Thropp (Nelson); Men’s Doubles, L. Stapp row) and D. Lee (Nightcaps); Ladies’ Doubles, Mrs Erridge and Mis Haggitt (A,rrow); Mixed Doubles, Mrs L. Puddy (Dunedin) and Thropp (Nelson). In the evening a successful and well-attended dance was held in the Athenaeum Hall Mrs L Murphy supplied the music. On Friday a hike led by Mr J. W Henderson was held. The party went up the Arrow River as far as " The Billy.” During the hike Mr Henderson related many interesting facts concerning the gold rush days. BOWLING At the week-end in brilliant sunshine the Arrow Bowling Club held a successful tournament. Sixteen teams competed. The winning rink was skipped by Clark (Christchurch). DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB A full day’s shooting was enjoyed on Boxing Day by a large number of members of the Defence Rifle Club. Rifleman W. J. Shaw won the president’s trophy and Rifleman W P Saunders was the runner-up. The scores are as follows: W. J. Shaw (300yds) 33, (500yds) 31 (600yds) 26 (handicap) 20J—total: 99; W. P. Saunders 28, 25, 30, 19—95; T. A. Shaw 32. 31, 25, 114 —94; J. D. Allan 31, 28 27, 11—94: W R. Shaw 31, 29, 29 31—92 J; J. G Allan 30, 22, 19, 201—891; C Allan 27 29 28, 5—891; M. Elliot 19, 29, 29, 111 —381; J B. Elliot 28, 21, 27, 12—88; L. Ogg C 3, 34, 25, 61—88; C. C. Johnston 24. 21, 24, 10—79.
