JAPAN’S EARTHQUAKE

EXAGGERATION ALLEGED (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) TOKIO. Dec. 31. Two American health officers, Lieu-tenant-colonel Lucius Thomas and Major Charles Lecket, after a week’s inspection, reported to-day that Japanese exaggeration gave the world a false impression of the earthquake and tidal wave damage of December 20. The officers said that local areas were severely hit, but the damage could not be considered a national disaster. Many householders reported damage if only one paper window was torn. Flimsy Japanese houses collapsed, but modern buildings were not heavily damaged. The final casualty figures were 1289 killed. 2364 injured, and 30 missing.
