NEW AGREEMENT SOUGHT (Rec. 9 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 21. The president of the United Mineworkers’ Union, Mr John L. Lewis, has sent a letter to the Secretary for the Interior, Mr J. A. Krug, who is the Federal custodian of the bituminous coal mines seized on May 22 last; demanding that the Government confer with him on November 1 to negotiate a new agreement covering hours, wages, and conditions for 450,000 soft coal miners. Mr Lewis claimed that the United Mineworkers’’contract with the Government was broken because significant changes in the Federal wage policy had occurred.
