INTERVENTION REFUSED

SENTENCE ON ARCHBISHOP (Rec. 7 p.m.) ‘ , LONDON. Oct. 21. The Minister of State, Mr Hector McNeil, replying to a question in the House of Commons concerning the trial and sentence of Archbishop Stepinac, stated that Mr Bevin, replying to the communication from the Archbishop of Westminster, said he considered it would be improper for the Government to lodge a protest, since the question was one of Yugoslav internal politics, but would watch the case carefully. The Vatican had made no direct representations, although the British viewpoint had been fully explained by the British Minister there. Mr Bevin had seen the preliminary report from the Birtish Ambassador in Belgrade, and at present found no grounds for varying his views expressed to the Archbishop of Westminster.
