EAST INDIES TRUCE
INDONESIAN INTERPRETATION RECOGNITION OF REPUBLIC (Rec. 9 p.m.) BATAVIA, Oct. 15. Or Sjahrir stated, that the truce which was signed on October 14 applied only to Java, Madura, and Sumatra, but he hoped that it would prove effective over Republican irregulars and Dutch forces in the outer islands, such as Celebes and Bali. Dr Sjahrir interpreted the Dutch signature on the tripartite truce as constituting de facto recognition of the Indonesian Republic, in spite of the fact that the agreement carefully avoided mentioning the republic by name. Regarding the question of the future stationing of Dutch forces in Indonesia, 'which is expected to be one of the main obstacles in the negotiations, Dr Sjahrir said: “In principle we are against foreign troops here, but we must be realistic. However, we will insist that we boss our own country.”
