LOWER GRADE COAL
NEED FOR INVESTIGATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 16. Stressing the necessity for investigating the reserves and the nature of New Zealand’s lower grade coal, so that the Dominion’s limited resources might be used to the greatest advantage, Mr W. G. Hughson, senior fuel chemist for the coal survey of New Zealand, in an address to the technological section of the Royal Society, said that at the present rate of consumption and according to the latest figures for coal reserves our bituminous coal supplies are possibly sufficient for 50 years. Against this, non-cooking and sub-bituminous coals and lignites are present in quantities sufficient for hundreds of years. High-grade bituminous coal from the West Coast must, therefore, be conserved for special purposes and lower grade coals used either in special equipment or in some processed form.
