THE HOSPITAL SCHEME FOR EXPANSION COST OF OVER £2,000,000 Plans for hospital expansion involving a total cost of over £2,000,000 have recently been under consideration by the OtagoHospital Board. The board has now authorised the taking of the necessary steps to obtain a further loan of £200,000. The works contemplated under this loan are: Additions to the Queen Mary Maternity Hospital (£89,000), the purchase of land in Frederick street (£lO 000). and the first instalment for the new Wakari Hospital (£100,000).. A decision has also been reached that steps should be taken under the Public Works Act to acquire land fronting Hanover street, opposite to the Hospital buildings, for hospital purposes.

Queen Mary Hospital The additions to the existing Queen Mary Maternity Hospital include pro-, vision for 25 more beds, 16 additional bedrooms for nurses and a sitting room, and a flat for the resident obstetrician The building will extend over the site of the present women’s bowling green of the Dunedin Bowling Club which has voluntarily relinquished the future'use of this area some time before its lease expires. The new wing will extend at the rear of the existing building towards Cumberland street. There is provision for a gynaecological outpatients department and ante-natak clinic on the ground floor, together with laboratories for clinical investigations. Extensions will be made to the existing nursery in order to double the present accommodation. . ... Steps have been taken to investigate the bearing capacity of the land at Wakari prior to the preparation of structural drawings for a new secondary hospital for chronic cases.
