VICTORY CONTINGENT
BLOW FOR AUSTRALIANS BAGS SEARCHED AT SYDNEY (Rec. 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 28. Customs officers' turned on an unexpected blitz on the Victory Contingent which returned to Sydney from Britain by the cruiser Shropshire today. Suddenly switching plans to land the men by ferry at the man-o’-war steps, where relatives were waiting, they took them to Circular quay and searched their bags behind- closed gates. It was more than two hours before the men were allowed to leave the wharf. The majority had to pay duty on cigarettes and-tobacco and many had to leave large quantities in bond until they could obtain the money. The men took the affair in good part but some complained that with 14 days’ leave ahead of them they had been left “ broke.” The blitz is understood to have been due to the fact that the officer in charge of the contingent would not take the responsibility for signing a declaration that no member of the party had more than £lO worth of dutiable goods in his possession. . A Customs warning had been given to the party after large quantities of cigarettes and tobacco had been landed at Fremantle and Adelaide without check. At Melbourne the Customs people were on the alert after reports of sales by the troops in other ports.
