ADJOURNMENT ISSUE

ANOTHER CLASH OF OPINION SMALL NATIONS ANXIOUS (Rec, 1.30 a.m.) PARIS, Aug. 16. Referring to press reports about a Sossible adjournment, Mr Molotov said ie Russians felt that the delegates should work harmoniously to end the conference as soon as possible, but he opposed an adjournment. The Exchange Telegraph correspondent at Paris states that the question of postponing the conference is now a serious issue, and there is likely to be 1 a sharp division of opinion thereon. Russia wants the conference to conclude its labours irrespective of the time table, but the smaller nations, who cannot simultaneously provide strong teams for the United Nations Organisation in New York and the Peace Conference in Paris, are expected to demand postponement. As a new move to speed up the conference work, Dr H. V. Evatt proposed to make August 20 the deadline for any amendments any delegation wishes to submit to the five draft treaties.

Australia is among the countries which will lodge amendments to the draft peace treaties, says Reuter's Paris correspondent. It is authoritatively stated that they are based on general principles, such as the necessity for fixing reparations and making territorial changes. They are expected to obtain support from all those who want what Mr Byrnes called equal economic opportunities for all- in former enemy countries.
