A PROGRESSIVE POLICY
IMMEDIATE ACTION UNLIKELY
Although the Budget announced the Government's intention of nationalising the coal mines, this does not mean (says a Parliamentary correspondent) that legislation will necessarily be introduced this session. Action taken to put the policy into effect will depend on the march of events. At first the Government will continue to buy pri-vately-owned mines ■as opportunity offers, and if this process reaches an advanced stage it is possible that a Bill will come down this year. At the same time progress in carrying out the policy will depend to some extent on the Government’s discussions with the miners. The miners are understood to have rejected a suggestion that the mines should be operated on a co-operative basis, and have favoured operation by a State department. Opinion in authoritative circles is that the chances are against coal nationalisation legislation appearing this session.
