SHORTAGE OF GAS

SERIOUS POSITION IN LONDON MANY-SIDED THREAT LONDON. Aug. 11. London faces a partial blackout, a shortage of bread, and a cut in industrial output as the result of the strike of 2,000 maintenance men in the Gaslight and Coke Company, which is in its fifth day. The gas supply to 5,000,000 consumers has already been cut by one-third. Depleted gas means less bread baked, and a blackout in 1,400 miles of streets in Whitehall, Chelsea, Westminster, and Fleet street. In addition 20,000 industrial producers, including exporters, may have their output curtailed.
