W. W. HOGG NOW IN JAPAN EARLY CONTESTS RECALLED (Official News Service.) (Rec. 0.30 a.m.) KURE, Aug. 9. One of the few men at Iwakuni who hold boxing honours is Warrant Officer W. W. Hogg, of No. 14 Squadron. R.N.Z.A.F, He has been fighting since he was a youth of 14. In 1934 he won the Australian amateur light-weight championship, which he still holds. Hogg began his amateur boxing'career at Invercargill and in more than 80 fights he has always forced the decision. New Zealanders who have followed amateur boxing over the years will recall such names as the Purdy brothers, MacLachlan and Bill and Jack Purvis, all of whom Hogg met. He comes from a family of fighters. His father and uncles were well-known pugilists, and his two brothers are both champions. Since arriving in Japan last March he has taken up the Japanese art of judo, and is taking a keen interest in lessons at Iwakuni He joined the Auxiliary Air Force in 1938, and before that he had been in the army for 12 years.
