ST. KILDA BOROUGH

FORTNIGHTLY COUNCIL MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council was held last night, the mayor (Mr N. D. Anderson) presiding. There were present Crs T. D. B. Roy, J. C. Cherry, R. S. Brent, J. W. Pearson, E. Longworth, J. H. Hinton, P. J. B. Rendel and D. J. Simpson. The chairman of the Finance Committee, Cr Brent, reported that although the rate demands had only been sent out on July 19 ove* £IOOO had already been collected out of a total of £28,000. The last day for payment was not until February 4 next. The town clerk, Mr J.- V. Trezise, in a special report stated that the cost of maintaining the Domain Board tip was causing him some concern. The borough’s share of one-quarter cost to July 21 was £262 12s sd, and included in this amount was £147 17s Id for, putting the tip in order to provide for its being worked on the Bradford system. The average cost a fortnight was approximately £72,; of which the borough paid a quarter share, which was in his opinion too high. A large percentage of refuse deposited consists of trade tippings from large manufacturing concerns in the city. A levy should be imposed on all vehicles other than city or borough refuse, and he would therefore recommend the council to give favourable consideration to this proposal and write to the Dunedin City Council to that effect.—The council decided that the town clerk should confer with the town clerk of the City of Dunedin on the question’. The town clerk also reported that the increased cost of materials had rendered it imperative that the council should* increase the charges for installing crossings. The present charge was £5 10s for plates and £3 10s for dropped crossings. The cost of installation at present was: Plates £8 10s, and dropped crossings £5 10s. —The council agreed that the charge should be increased. The water consumption in the borough for the past fortnight was 4.242,000 gallons, at a cost of. £167 18s 3d. The cost for the previous two weeks was £167 15s Id. The town clerk reported that the' receipts since the last meeting totalled £643 14s 5d and the bank balance stood at £6O Is lOd. Accounts totalling £394 9s 2d were passed for payment.
