TREMENDOUS POWER

' DERWENT JET ENGINES USE IN FORTHCOMING TEST (Reci 1 a.m.) LONDON, Aug; 9, The Rolls-Royce Derwent jet engines which are to be used lor the Meteors’ forthcoming speed record attempt develop a 42001 b thrust, equal to 12,000 horse-power. They are the same as those used in the successful attempt last November, but the engines were then “ screwed down ” to a 36001 b thrust. They are the standard engines now used in R.A.F. Meteors, except that certain parts, such as the turbine blades, have been improved metallurgically. Each engine consumes more than two tons of air a minute, equivalent to making a vacuum from a 12ft square room in a second and a-half. • • -
