NEW APPOINTMENT MR H. F. O’LEARY, K.C. ANNOUNCEMENT MADE (P.A.) WELLINGTON. Aug. 9. The new Chief Justice of New Zealand is Mr H. F. O’Leary, K.C., of Wellington, whose appointment to this

office was made to-day by the Gover-nor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg.' The announcement of the appointment was made this evening by the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser. Mr Justice O’Leary succeeds Sir Michael Myers, whose retirement from the office of Chief Justice was formally announced in last night’s Gazette.

The new Chief Justice, who has been prominent at the Bar in Wellington for many years, was born at Blenheim in 1886. He was educated at the Masterton School, Wellington College and Victoria College, where he graduated LL.B. He was a University representative footballer. He was president of the Wellington District Law So6iety in 1921-22, and in 1935 he was elected president of the New Zealand Law Society, an office which he has held ever since. He has been a member of the New Zealand Council of Law Reporting since 1929 and of the Victoria University College Council since 1934. He was created King’s Counsel in' 1935. He was married in 1912 to Miss Lillian Gallagher, and they have one son.
