GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES

SECOND DAY AT RICCARTON

BRAMBLE SONG IN FAVOUR

FRANCES AMONG PROSPECTS

(Special.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. The fields engaged on the second day of the Grand National meeting tomorrow should provide contests right up to the standard usually associated with this popular fixture. It must be said, however, that the quality of the field engaged in the Beaufort Steeples does not rank high Proof of that is supplied by the fact that Spanish Main, who had 9st in the Grand National steeplechase, is now top weight with list 91b. This is due to an effort to bring hacks, hunters and national horses into the same field. The Grand National Hurdles field is not strong from a numerical point of view, but the race promises to be a very interesting one. Those most likely to be in favour are Prize Ring, Bramble Song, Brantome, and Dumbo, with Sphere as the best outsider. Plans for British Mint

Though British Mint schooled well over hurdles after a disappointing performance over the big fences earlier in the week, it is reported that he will start in the Beaufort Steeplechase, rather than in the ‘Grand National Hurdles. Alamode was scratched for the Sumnei Handicap at 9 a.m., and Soneri for the' Islington Handicap and her third day engagements at ll.? 6 a.m.

The programme about Leigh Barton has not yet been decided. His trainer favours the Islington Handicap, in spite of no rain falling, but the final decision will be left to the owners.

Latest news about Nepeta is that he will run in the August Handicap. Sedgemere may not be started in the August Handicap, unless rain falls, which seems unlikely at present. Piccolo was under treatment yesterday for a slight poisoning of a leg. It yielded to treatment, however, and he was all right to-day.

Kirkella has bruised one of his heels and he is a doubtful starter to-mor-row, though H. Nurse hopes ( to race him next week.

Olga’s Choice has been sold to Mr J. L. Cheeseman, and he has joined A 1 Sirat and Bridgeacre in R. Nelson's stable. He will run for his new owner in the Spreydon Hurdles to-morrow, with I. Walther riding.

A. Messervy, who now resides in Auckland, arrived here this week. His intention - was to have a holiday, put he has accepted the mounts on Philary and Liquidate for to-morrow. Kiloney. Monatone, Stromboli, Grand Forest and Douglas Haig arrived yesterday from South Canterbury. Riding Engagements
