Friday, August 9 (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.i

A Serious Charge Hyman Julius Isaacs, aged 67, a retired bootmaker, who was represented by Mr J G. Warrington, instructed by Mr F. M. Hanan, appeared on remand on a charge of unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. The accused was further remanded until August 19, Chief Detective Hall stating that the woman in the case was still in hospital. The existing bail of £250 in his own recognisance and one surety of £250 was renewed, the accused to report daily to the police. Desertion of Ship Richard Edward Bowman, aged 22, and Sidney Phillip Yegliss, who was represented by Mr W. H. Carson, pleaded guilty to deserting their ship, the Akaroa, at Port Chalmers. Chief Detective Hall said the accused were assistant stewards, and they deserted when the Akaroa was in port in April last. Since then they had been working at a factory in the city. A month ago they had called at the Police Station, but had been told they were not wanted. Since then a warrant for their arrest had arrived from Wellington.—Mr Carson said the accused were not of a criminal type. Bowman had been six years at sea, serving mainly in the Mediterranean, and Yegliss had been in Russian and Indian convoys.—The accused were sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment Arrears of Maintenance Edward Raymond Terence Sullivan (Mr C. H. Stevens) was charged with default of a maintenance order, the arrears of which amounted to £47.—The defendant was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended so long as he paid £2 a week until the arrears were paid off.
