Sir, —Following recent complaints of delay in publishing the department’s accounts (to 31/12/44 and 31/3/45 appearing only on 9—7—46) the Auditorgeneral's report makes interesting reading. He states ” some £50,000 [was the loss] on Tasmanian potatoes imported during 1945-46 ” nad he also refers to ” other losses such as £35,000 in connection with egg pulp from Australia.” The words " such as ” surely have a very intriguing significance.
Items of information such as these perhaps explain the director’s " coyness in releasing his accounts to demonstrate the efficiency of State trading, particularly just before the election, as the taxpaying elector is probably becoming more than a little restive under State control, as a foretaste of ultimate Socialism.—l am. etc., Oamaru, August 5. R. Finch.
