CITY COUNCIL ATTENDANCES
Sir, —While the table you publish in Wednesday's Daily Times of the attendances by councillors at meetings of council and committees during the year 194445 is interesting, I am informed that it is valueless as an indication of the zeal and levity that the different councillors display in fulfilling the pledges given at election time to devote themselves diligently to the duties they undertake. It is claimed that what is required for a true comparison is the total number of hours taken up by all the meetings throughout the year and the percentage of this total that each councillor gives to the meeting he is due to attend. I understand that a meeting may last two hours or more, and attendance of a councillor is recorded even if he turns up in the last five minutes. If the hourly record is not kept at present, may I suggest that this should be done in future, so that the table published may give honour where honour is due.—l am, etc., If the Cap Fits. August 8.
