MYSTERIOUS CALL FOR HELP

VESSEL NOT IDENTIFIED (Rec. 1.15 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 8. The origin of a mysterious S.O.S. picked up on Tuesday from an unknown vessel believed to be sinking 200 miles west of Land’s End has still not been determined. The Air Ministry stated that whatever happened was so sudden that there could not be any further developments.

Three vessels converged on the position after picking up faint S.O.S. signals apparently transmitted on a failing radio. The ship’s position was believed to be close to that at which the American Farmer was taken in tow by the Elizabeth.
