GREEK ARMED BANDS
SPONSORED BY COMMUNISTS MOPPING-UP COMPLETED (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 8. Several thousand Greek troops, assisted by gendarmerie, light artillery, armoured units and a few reconnaisance planes completed a week's “ mop-ping-up” operations against armed bands in the area of Mount Olympus Southern Macedonia, reports Reuter’s correspondent in Athens. Government circles allege that the bands, sponsored by Communists, include many former members of the E.L.A.S. resistance movement.
The conclusion of the operations is regarded as having foiled a Communist attempt to provoke a state of anarchy on the eve of the plebiscite on the question whether King George should return to Greece.
