Jottings J Williamson has been engaged to ride Red Glare in the Grand National Steeplechase. , Acceptances are due to-day for the first card of the Grand National meeting. The two-year-old gelding Thomas is the first of Queen of Song’s foals to race. Queen of Song was a really good performer, and should produce something out of the common.
The Wild Chase—High Rank colt Hart Royal won at Riccarton in a style suggesting that he may be a good winner as a three-year-old. He began well, and won all the way.
R. Collett has been engaged to ride Brantome in the Grand National Hurdles. W. Jenkins who had been engaged to ride Brantome this season, is at present in hospital at Palmerston North after suffering serious injuries. Collett has previously schooled Brantome. Slayer was looking dangerous when closing up near the nome turn in the Lawford Steeplechase, but, although under hard pressure, he could not seriously challenge Night Prince, who apparently won with a good deal In hand. Hunting Mac is one of the most brilliant hurdlers seen at Riccarton for some time. He. jumps big, and this may not help him to stay. In fact, he appeared to be stopping at the last hurdle when Endurance closed up, but he still had a good margin in his favour at the post. Two Southlanders in Special Fight and Spare Part were bracketed in the Haldon Stakes. Special Flight is another of Francolin’s produce, and she won so well that she seems likely to keep up the family reputation. Spare Part is a two-year-old by Salmagundi—Mei Tui
Lost Their Riders The Raker and Arctic. Dawn failed to show up favourably in their first acquaintance with the Riccarton country, as both parted with their riders early in the Lawford Steeplechase. Jacksonville was travelling well in front when he dropped his rider at the sod wall. Return to Favour.
Night Prince created a favourable impression when he won a double over the Wingatui fences at the winter meeting, but he failed when taken to the North Island. His win in the Lawford Steeples will restore him to favour, as he shaped well in winning over the Riccarton fences. The Hunt Cup Although only a small field went to the post for the Hunt Cup, it was run in a good sporting spirit that ignored the handicap. The piebald gelding The Pie carried 241 b overweight Noble Robert 9Jlb, and Mittens 411 b. Bank Raid went too close to the wing at the first fence and ran off. The Pie soon tailed off, but the others raced in close company until Golden Glow drew out to win. Master Play fell at the second last fence, but was remounted, and‘completed the course. A Disappointment Arctic Dawn was the disappointment of the Lawford Steeplechase field, as he created a favourable impression by the manner in which he won at Timaru. He fenced safely over the kennels double and the sod wall, but dropped his rider at the high brush fence which follows. He may show improvement in his next attempt over the Riccarton fences, and should not be discarded for a first failure. Barrier Positions
The barrier positions in the Brabazon Handicap were: 15 Swift Quarry. 5 Tiger Tan, 22 Typhoon, 2 Bonny Flight, 4 Tutere, 8 Soneri, 6 Gland Forest, 13 Sing Sing, 20 Grill, 10 Salary, 12 Whitley, 21 Ganges, 17 Lowry Bay. 19 Money Bird, 14 Leigh Barton, 9 Swingalong. 11 Western Front, 18 Dash o’ Dink, 1 Double Cross. 7 Burberry, 16 Lexia, 3 Sumra Swifl Quarry gave trouble at the post, and was hopelessly left. Sumra also gave trouble, and so did Grand Forest.
