FREIGHT BY AIR
NEW STATE SERVICE
A START ON MONDAY (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 26. What appears to be the first practical move in the establishment of a State airways service for New Zealand is announced by the Minister of Railways, Mr R. Semple, who said that from Monday next the interisland carriage of goods by air would be added to the services provided by the Railways Department. Dakotas operated by the Royal New Zealand Air Force will be used for the service. Air freight space, by arrangement with the Air Department, will be available daily between Wellington and Christchurch each way, and on Mondays. Wednesdays and Fridays between Auckland and Christchurch each way. The packages are limited to lewt, and their three dimensions, added together, must not exceed 60 inches. Rail and railway road services will be used to distribute the goods from the air terminals, and rail and air depots will be established at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
The minimum time from consignor to consignee in the Auckland-Christ-church service would be six hours, said the Minister. He expected that the services would be widely used for the transport of such items as early fruit and flowers, urgent medicines, spare parts for machinery, millinery and light fragile packages, which were the freight mostly sent by air in other countries.
