Jottings The stakes to be offered at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting have occasioned favourable comment. Acceptances for the first day of the Grand National meeting are due on Monday. If sent to the post, Leigh Barton will be sure of support for the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton to-morrow. Knight Crusader generally gets away well, and consequently is worthy of note when a big field goes to tfhe post. Dual Gift, a recent winner at Flemlngton, was won as the prize In a lottery for charity, and was bought by Mr W R. Kemball for 875gns. Botany had been off the scene for some considerable time prior to his reappearance at Timaru. He showed a retention of speed, and the race should help to improve him. , , Bonny Flight has not been lucky in her engagements this season, but at her best she could not be overlooked in her engagement's at Riccarton. It is doubtful if a field has ever been engaged in a race at Riccarton with less line to form than that booked to race in the Hunt Cup Steeplechase. A Melbourne report states that Mr Rosa and Barwon have been backed to win over £IOO,OOO In the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double. It is reported that Mr O. R. Precipitate has been placed three times in eight starts. In the second division' Majestic Fox, a shapely two-year-old, may improve as the result of experience, but locating a likely winner is mostly a matter ot guesswork.

Chatsworth The dispersal of a North Island stud gave Mr J. Mitchell an opportunity to buy the imported stallion Chatsworth and place him at the service of breeders in the South Island. Chatsworth has already proved his merit as a sire by getting several winners of note. He got Gay Chat, a winner of the A.J.C. Champagne Stakes; Iwo Jima, unbeaten in three starts; Chetsvorde, a winner of three races this season; a recent winner in Beb, and others who appear to be likely winners in the future. Chatsworth is a son of Dastur, who also got Dhoti, the leading sire in Australia. Bees of Hardwicke, the dam of Chatsworth, was got by Hurry On from Llsma, by Persimmon, one of St. Simon’s best sons on the turf and at the stud. Hurry On is best known inNew Zealand as the sire of Hunting Song and Persimmon in Australia as the sire of Comedy King. Brackets

There are 33 acceptors for the Haldon Stakes, and as the safety number at the six furlong barrier is 26, provision has been made to run the race in divisions. The brood mare Vive la Veera, owned by Mr F. H. Mehta, of Bombay, India, was sent to Wellington last week from the Inglewood Stud on the first stages of her journey to India. She has been served to English time by the young Nearco stallion Lord Bobs, and this marks an innovation in the history of New Zealand bloodstock breeding which may have important bearings in the future. Vive la Veera is a chestnut mare by Royal Chief from Fairwood, a half-sister to Platform, and comes from the same family as Macedoine, Rin Tin Tin, and other good horses which trace to the Hammock taproot.
