ALARMING DIMENSIONS
CRIME WAVE IN AUCKLAND URGENT CALL FROM MAYOR (P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 5. Concern at the amount of crime in Auckland in recent months was expressed to-day by the Mayor, Mr J. A. C. Allum. He described thieving from houses and other properties as a crime wave, and advised members of the public to supplement police activity by taking steps to protect their property. "I am gravely concerned that there should be so much crime for money and other personal gain, which seems strange in a time of apparent prosperity,” said Mr Allum. “The amount of breaking and entering and other theft in Auckland recently has reached the dimensions of a crime wave, and for the size of the city it is hardly a minor crime wave. The loss of property is not the only effect that must be considered, for the amount of crime is unnerving many people. “Judged from the published reports, most of the breaking and entering occurs at week-ends,” Mr Allum added. “It seems that in the present circumstances the citizens can do no more than take every possible precaution to protect their property and invoke the help of their neighbours when necessary.”
